STUDENT HANDBOOK

MISSION STATEMENT

The Edmonson County 5/6 Center staff, along with family and community support, will provide a safe environment and the opportunity for all students to learn and become productive citizens.

WELCOME TO THE EDMONSON COUNTY 5/6 CENTER

As we set out to begin a new and exciting year, I would like to take this opportunity to personally welcome each and every student to a place filled with learning, positivity, and engagement on a daily basis.  The faculty and staff take great pride in providing our students with a school environment that is safe, nurturing, understanding, and friendly.

We also aspire to be a welcoming environment to all parents, as it is my belief that parental involvement is one of the major keys to a student's success.  I encourage parents and guardians to become actively involved with the school’s Parent Teacher Organization, attend Site Based Council Meetings, and stay in constant contact with the teachers and staff of the 5/6 Center.  Together we can make a difference in the lives of the students in Edmonson County.

Students should use this handbook as a guide to help them become familiar with the expectations, policies, and procedures of the 5/6 Center.  Any student or parent needing help understanding anything within this handbook should feel free to consult a member of the faculty and staff.

Sincerely,

Charla Caudill, Principal

GRADING PERIODS

Grading periods are approximately nine weeks long. Report cards will be sent home with students a few days after each nine weeks grading period has ended.  A progress report will be sent home with the students approximately halfway through each nine week grading period.

VISITORS

Parents and visitors shall report to the main office before proceeding to any part of the building.  All parents and visitors shall enter the building through the main office area on the West Center Street side of the building.  All visitors must show proper ID and must obtain a Visitor’s Pass from the office.  Students shall not bring a “guest” to school.

STUDENT DROP-OFF

The only entrance available to parents, guardians, or visitors is located on West Center Street at the main entrance to the building.  These doors will not open until 7:30 a.m.  Students may be dropped off at the gym entrance at 7:10 a.m.  Students that arrive before 7:30 a.m. shall enter the building through the gymnasium using the doors (Door C) on the West Center Street side of the building (the same location where students that ride the bus enter and exit).  Students who arrive early must remain in the gym until 7:30 a.m.

STUDENT CHECK-IN/CHECK-OUT

The bell to begin class will ring at 7:48 a.m.  Students that arrive after 7:48 a.m. must report to the main office and sign in.  They will be counted tardy (or receive a half-day absence, depending on arrival time) for the day and will need a note from the secretary before being allowed to enter class.

The bell to dismiss classes will ring at 2:35 p.m.  If a student must leave school early, the parent or an adult who has written authorization (on file at the 5/6 Center) from the guardian, shall report directly to the principal or her secretary, and they will call for the student.  Students that are checked out of school prior to this time will be counted tardy (or receive a half-day absence, depending on departure time).  A student may not leave school grounds before the last dismissal bell unless he/she is signed out through the office.  The parent or person who has written authorization on file at the 5/6 Center must sign out any student that does not ride the bus.  These students will go directly to the office after the bell at 2:35 p.m.

ATTENDANCE

Students that have been absent should bring a parent note or doctor’s excuse to Mr Arnold or their homeroom teacher on the day they return to school.  Parent notes must have the student’s full name, list the date of the absence(s), a valid reason as to why they were absent, and be signed by their parent/guardian (see district attendance policy manual).  Once a child returns from an absence, they have five school days to submit an excuse. Students will be allowed three parent notes per semester and a total of 6 parent notes per school year.  Students will not be allowed to use all six parent notes in one semester

Students that have unexcused absences will receive a grade of 0 for all work they missed that day.  Suspensions are considered as unexcused absences (Administration discretion).

One Call is used to notify the guardian when a student is absent.  A student who has six unexcused absences will be considered a habitual truant.  After the eighth unexcused absence the student will be referred to the Director of Pupil Personnel for possible legal action.

BREAKFAST AND LUNCH

Breakfast is served from 7:30-7:48 a.m.  Students that do not ride the school bus should arrive at school in time to eat breakfast and be ready for class by 7:48 a.m.  Lunch is served from 11:10 a.m.-12:40 p.m.  Students that have a negative balance in their account will not be allowed to charge extra food items.  Microwave ovens are not available at the 5/6 Center for students who chose to bring their own lunch to school.

MONEY

The 5/6 Center has no means of providing change for students. It is recommended that parents/guardians pay for yearbooks, pictures, and other items with a personal check.

SNACKS/DRINKS/GUM

No outside drinks, with the exception of bottled water in a clear container, are allowed at school unless they are with a sack lunch, and the drink must be in the original container.  Students must have permission from their teacher to have a drink or snack in their classroom.  Students are allowed to have gum at school, but must have individual teacher approval before chewing gum in the classroom. This privilege may be taken away if abused by the student.

STUDENT FILES

Students will not be allowed to attend the Edmonson County 5/6 Center unless they have the following items on file with the school.

All students will need the following items on file with the school secretary.

If any of the above information changes, please notify school personnel so we can maintain the correct information on our students.

BUS PASSES

Whenever a student needs to disembark the bus at a location other than his/her regular pickup/dropoff location, that student must obtain a bus pass from the office by presenting a written request (to the school secretary) of the change, signed by his/her parents/guardian.  A physical address must be listed on the written request provided to the front office.  Students shall ride the bus they have been assigned, from Kyrock Elementary and South Edmonson Elementary, to and from the 5/6 Center.  Students are not allowed to switch buses without permission from the principal.

BUS DISCIPLINE

Students must obey the driver’s request at all times.  A complete list of bus rules may be found in the “Student Code of Conduct” handbook.  Refusal to follow and/or obey the driver will result in the driver reporting misbehavior to the principal.  The following are the general guidelines used to discipline bus misbehavior:

1st offense Student conference (letter to parents).

2nd offense One-day bus suspension.

3rd offense Three-day bus suspension.

4th offense Five-day bus suspension.

5th offense Number of days to be determined by the school administrator.

When the first offense is fighting, verbal abuse of the driver, or an offense that endangers the student or other students, probation will be waived and the student will receive a minimum three-day bus suspension.  In special circumstances the investigating administrator may place the student in AE.

CLASSROOM ASSIGNMENT

Parent requests for specific teachers will not be taken at the 5/6 Center.

LOCKERS

Lockers are provided to students at no cost.  However, students that misuse their lockers may lose their locker privileges.  Students should use their assigned lockers to store only school-related items, and be considerate of others when opening their lockers.  School officials have the right to inspect lockers to ensure correct and safe use.

MEDICATION

All medication (including inhalers, EpiPens, daily prescribed medications, Tylenol, etc.) must be registered at the A+  office.  A+ will designate a secure location for medication to be stored.  Only individuals that have been trained by the district nurse may administer prescription or over-the-counter medication.  These individuals must write the date, time, and initial the proper form when they administer medication.  Students that plan on attending field trips and need medication must have someone from the school that has been trained to administer medication travel with the student, or a parent/guardian may meet the student at a designated site and administer the medication.

The following are guidelines that pertain to the administering of medication:

STUDENTS THAT WALK TO AND FROM SCHOOL

Students are allowed to walk to and from school if they have a note on file in the principal’s office.  If bad weather occurs the principal may place all students on the bus unless a parent/guardian signs the student out of school.  Phone calls for the purpose of allowing students to walk home from school are not allowed.

SCHOOL ACTIVITIES

Students may participate in the following activities at the 5/6 Center.

Students may participate in the following activities at Edmonson County Middle School.

TARDY POLICY

Promptness to class is very important.  Students are to be in their seats and ready to begin work when scheduled classroom instruction is set to begin.  Tardiness by a student constitutes disruptive behavior and delays the beginning of instruction for that class.  The teacher will confer with the student after class concerning tardiness.  Teachers are to keep a record of tardies as well as absences.

Students will be excused for tardies only if they have a note stating that he/she has been detained by a staff member or if an emergency occurs.  If a student has unexcused tardies in his/her class during a nine weeks grading period, he/she will be disciplined in the following manner:

RETENTION POLICY

Any student failing two (2) or more of the core area subjects as of the year-end average will be recommended for retention.  The principal will notify parents concerning the recommendation.  Taking into consideration, grades, teacher recommendations, IEP’s (if applicable), and parental input, the principal will make the final decision on retention.

Parent requests for retention will be determined by a majority vote of the SBDM Council.

THREATS/HARASSMENT

ALCOHOL/SUBSTANCE ABUSE POLICY

Edmonson County School District policy forbids the trafficking, distributing, using, and possession of drugs, drug paraphernalia, counterfeit drugs, look-alike drugs, or alcohol on school property or at school-sponsored events. If an Edmonson County student violates the school substance abuse policy, the following procedures will be followed as soon as possible.

until the principal has adequate time to investigate the incident and schedule a

disciplinary hearing. The student and his/her parents/guardians will be required to

attend this hearing. The student's status in the Edmonson County School System

will be determined at the hearing, in accordance with Edmonson County Board

         Policy.

SCHOOL CONDUCT

VOICE LEVELS

           0-Total Silence  1-Whisper  2-Group Work  3-Presentations to Class

RESTROOM CONDUCT

Some rules are necessary when a group of students interact with each other for a school year. Most students will have no trouble following these rules if they are courteous to their classmates and teachers and respect the rights of others. At the Edmonson County 5th/6th Center an important part of education is learning to get along with others.

All school rules apply:

The principal has the option as described in the District Code of Conduct for dealing with behavior violations. The alternatives for discipline management may include, but are not limited to the following:

Although incidents will be considered on a case-by-case occurrence, at the discretion

Discipline Policy

Four Levels of offenses:

Number one being minor offenses, number four being the most serious offenses.  Also listed are other offenses that are subject to suspension, expulsion, and/or legal action.  Each violation of an offense will be recorded in the appropriate level and is accumulative with other violations throughout the entire school year.  All violations that fall into the same offense level combine to determine the amount of detention or suspension time.

Level 1 Offenses (Minor)

Reports will be assigned for each violation.  If the student fails to complete the report in an adequate amount of time, they will face the following penalties.

1st offense warning/probation

2nd offense report and 1 day AE

3rd offense report and 2 days AE

4th offense principal’s discretion

Penalties will start over at the beginning of each school year.

***Reports will not be assigned for failing to complete assignments.  However, penalties for office referral are the same.  Each subject department will determine at what point students are referred to the office for failing to complete assignments.  Guardians will be notified of any offense leading to AE time or a suspension.

Level 2 Offenses

1st offense one day AE

2nd offense two days AE

3rd offense three days AE (parent conference)

Additional offenses principal’s discretion

Level 3 Offenses

1st offense three days AE

2nd offense five days AE

3rd offense suspension (principal’s discretion)

Level 4 Offenses

1st offense three days suspension

2nd offense five days suspension

3rd offense long-term suspension

4th offense referral for expulsion

Any student who is in violation of any of the following shall be subject to suspension, expulsion, and/or legal action.

A school administrator may initiate disciplinary action in a particular case.  All of these policy guidelines are for general misbehaviors.  A disciplinary action may be altered at the discretion of the administrator depending on the severity of the offense.

A student’s AE assignment may be extended due to incomplete work or misbehavior.  Extension will be administered at the discretion of the principal or his/her designee.  At the end of this extension, if work or behavior is still not acceptable, the student may be considered for out-of-school suspension or recommended to the Board of Education for expulsion.

When a student is suspended, administration will schedule a conference with a guardian prior to the student’s return to school.
